Year 4 Spring Term 1
Welcome to year 4
Oakes Class - Mrs Jarvis/Mrs Widdowson
Parkin Class - Mr Jones
Teaching assistants - Mrs Patrick/Mrs Pedley/Miss Robinson/Mrs Elwyn/Mrs Beecroft
Arrangements for the start of the school year 2021-22
Following Government advice on the need to maintain hygiene routines and taking into account that the majority of parents and staff favoured it we will continue to have a staggered start and finish to the school day. It will not be as spread out as it is now but our arrangements will enable all children to wash their hands on entry and exit to the building and hopefully to reduce the number of children, parents and cars waiting outside. As you will know the volume of traffic outside school can be seriously problematic.
Year 4
8.35am Children from both classes (Oakes – Mrs Jarvis & Mrs Widdowson / Parkin – Mr Jones) can come onto the site, with parents if you wish to.
Enter through the main gate and wait in the area next to the car park
8.40am - the children will be met by class teachers and taken through to the lower playground, wash hands and then go to class.
8.50am Register will be taken with learning starting immediately they enter the classroom.
3.20pm both classes will finish school leaving by the same route as they entered after handwashing. Parents are welcome to come onto the site from 3.15pm to meet their child.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We're really pleased to welcome you back to the new spring term.
This is our home page where you can find lots of information about the current term along with a little bit of guidance to help you and your child through the next term.
Important weekly dates
Parkin Class/Oakes Class Forest schools - every alternate Wednesday. We will notify you by text when it is your child's week for Forest School. Make sure your child has a complete change of clothing that they can take part in outdoor activities with. They will get very muddy and wet at times so please ensure children have old clothes to wear.
Both classes - PE. Your child will also need a PE kit in school on a weekly basis. Please make sure your child has a PE kit with all of the clothing named in school on a permanent basis.
Please make sure that your child has the following items in school on a weekly basis; reading book and the CGP homework books for both English & Maths (these will be marked on a Monday)
Curriculum focus
English
This term we will be focusing on the book 'Bill's New Frock' written by Anne Fine, as our book study. The learning will focus on our inferential reading skills and reading comprehension, which include detective thinking, visualisation and breakdowns in meaning.
In writing, we will be focusing on sentence structure, making sure that all of the sentences written make sense and have variety. Then children will need to further develop their sentences using a range of different sentence types before finally producing ones that link and flow into paragraphs.
Please continue to listen to your child read as often as possible. This is vital! In addition to this, we would like the children to quiz at home at least once a week on the Accelerated Reading website.
We will also be encouraging children to spend 3 sessions of 20 minutes per week using Lexia in school. If you wish, you child can also access this from home if they would like additional learning.Spelling Frame - Make sure your child quizzes on their new spellings every week and plays the games for between 10 to 30 minutes. What do all the words have in common? Does your child know the spelling rule? Are these spellings being put into their everyday writing? New spellings will be given out every Monday and tested the following Monday. If you are unsure which week's spellings your child is learning, check on the Spelling Frame page and the current spellings will be clearly visible.
Maths
This term we are focusing on multiplication and division. This is a very important area to cover. It is vitally important that children learn and can recall their times tables up to 12 x 12. This allows children to use this information quickly whilst solving maths problems and is a vital part of the learning in year 4.
TTRockstars - make sure your child completes at least one soundcheck and one studio game and then spends another 10-15 minutes improving their times tables. The key here is to learn times table looking for patterns and connections. Search for even/odd/ connections and links to other multiples. Do the answers have anything in common?
Unit of Learning
This term we will be learning all about Ancient Egypt. We will be learning what people's lives were like during this historical period. We will be looking at Ancient Egyptian society, culture, the economy, religion and what politics was like and how this period of time has influenced other historical times.
We hope your child is happy in school. We want to make sure they have the best possible experience whilst ensuring they are well placed with their learning to make the next steps forward. If we can be of any further help or support please do not hesitate to contact us.
